Belize is an ideal holiday destination for those desiring an adventure vacation, just as it is a peaceful, relaxing getaway in a tropical paradise for people looking for a serene, quiet vacation. But before planning a trip to Belize, it is important to do some thorough research about Belize’s in-depth history, culture, climatic conditions, and its geography.

1. Entry Requirements
A passport is required for travelling to Belize. Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond the duration of your intended stay in the country.

Citizens of the United States, Canada, and most European countries are not required to have a Visa upon entry. A 30-day entry visa is granted upon arrival to tourists. If more time is needed, the Visa can be extended at any Immigration Office for a fee of US$25.

2. Safety
Belize is a peaceful country with friendly people. However, as is the case with all countries, there are some essential safeguards tourists need to adhere to. Under no circumstances associate with anyone who is trying to introduce you to drugs. This rule applies to every country and tourist destination and Belize is no different.

As a general rule, you will be as safe in Belize as you are at home. Just as one typically keeps away from unfamiliar remote areas at night even at home, use the same precautions in Belize as well. This is plain and simple common sense. Enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the jungle or the islands of Belize by exercising sound safety principles.

3. Health
There are no immunizations or medication required for Belize. Belize is in the tropics and thus has tropical diseases such as malaria. However, it is rare that visitors to Belize are infected. If you have any particular health concern, see your doctor who can prescribe preventive medication before you travel to Belize.

Belize has health clinics throughout which offer a good degree of care in case you happen to fall ill. However, acute illness will most likely result in transport to the U.S. for care.

As is the case with all the tropical areas, Belize has insects that can become annoying. It is best that you prepare for your trip by bringing some insect repellents and lotion to prevent itching.

Normally, more mosquitoes are encountered in the islands and lower coastal areas than in the interior. Nonetheless, this preparation will insure your Belize vacation in the islands or interior is relatively pest free.

Also, be sure to bring an adequate supply of medication that you normally use. It could be difficult finding the exact medication your doctor had prescribed if you run out.

4. Currency
US$ cash is accepted everywhere in Belize but while travelling avoid displaying large amounts. Use a money belt or pouch that can be worn under your clothing for carrying cash.. Almost all ATM’s accept foreign credit cards if they display a Visa Logo or other notable card logos. Also, Traveller’s Cheques can be easily exchanged here. The local banks exchange only American, Canadian Dollars and British Sterling.

Do not bring large bills for cash. Few merchants have the ability to provide large amounts of change when you are shopping in Belize. A balance of a reasonable amount of cash or Travellers Checks with a credit card will work well.

5. Clothing
Bring clothes of lightweight fabrics, preferably cotton. Clothes should be loose and comfortable to wear. Keep long chinos, khaki pants, short sleeved shirts, hiking shoes and shoes for jungle walks. Also bring swimsuits, windbreakers and one pair of light sandals. Ladies can bring a large shawl to use it as a sarong over a swimsuit.

6. Things to Bring
Bring your own camera and extra batteries as they can be expensive. . If a Belize jungle tour or a visit to the beautiful cayes (islands) of Belize are on your itinerary don’t forget to carry binoculars to fully enjoy your trip.

Also bring a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, insect repellent and a small flashlight. A lightweight fold-up poncho can be very helpful as you never know when it might rain in Belize, especially in the rainforests. While packing, keep all the necessary medications handy for the duration of your stay. Avoid bringing perfumes and heavily-scented toiletries as they attract mosquitoes and other insects.

Duffle Bag

How would I know if a duffle bag I found on eBay is an authentic COACH bag?

It is used, but is in excellent condition. It has the creed patch on the inside with 5 letters & 4 numbers on the bottom of the patch. The buckles have Coach engraved on them. It also has a leather tab with Coach Leatherware Est. 1941 stamped on it. Does this sound like an authentic Coach Duffle Bag?

Leg Panel

My App has a bit of a swollen rear left leg. The farrier thinks she kicked a side panel. How do I treat her?

I don’t have a whole lot of money to go to the vet right now, and I just gave her some bup for her swelling and ran cold water on her lower leg. What other methods can I use to help treat her? She was walking around the round pen and even trotting fine today. Thanks.

The cold water is a good start and maybe some linement on the leg after riding. Think about what you would do for your own leg in a similar situation. Depending on where it is you may be able to fill a bucket with water and epsom salt and soak it, this works well to help the aches as well as reduce the swelling. It sounds like it’s just a little bump since she is walking/trotting on it without favoring it.

Metal Hardware

So, you’re moving into that home you just bought and now you are noticing a lot of little things that need to be done to really clean it up. While the place is clean enough and seems to have been well cared for, there are a few areas that some things were overlooked. The cabinet hardware seems to have been left on for a few paint jobs and the metal pieces have a lot of residual paint on them. Either that or when they repainted the cabinets, they just painted the cabinet hardware right along with everything else. Before you think you have to get rid of all those cabinet hardware pieces and start over again, there is another option. You can remove the paint.

When you look at the doorknobs, pulls, and other cabinet hardware pieces you likely can immediately see why regular methods of paint stripping would be futile. There are too many small curves to be able to take a scraper along them to get the old paint off. Taking a bunch of sandpaper or other abrasive action can damage the metal cabinet hardware that’s under all that paint, so you instead just need to take a breath, and have the patience to do this the right way.

Pull out a boiling pot that has seen better days and can retire from its life as a cooking utensil, add some water and baking soda and start cooking. You want to put enough water into the pot to cover the biggest of the pieces you are going to try and restore. You don’t want to overdo the water, or you will just waste time waiting for it to get hot enough. Now add enough baking soda to make a whole layer along the bottom of the pot.

Next, you’re going to place the metal pieces in the pot, turn the stove on, and wait for it to simmer. Once a few bubbles start you should turn it down to low and let it continue to simmer for at least a half hour.

You can tell if the paint removing concoction is done by seeing if the paint is starting to come off of the metal pieces. If you are not sure, you may want to use a wooden skewer or other similar instrument to push along one of the pieces to see if the paint has softened enough. The next test is to pull one piece out and see if you can rub the paint off. Remember, these are hot pieces of metal, so take precautions to not burn yourself.

If the paint does not rub off easily, pop it back in the pot to boil a little longer. Eventually that stubborn paint will give in, and let go. Get rid of your paint and water soup, and you’re ready to finish restoring those pieces of cabinet hardware.

You can now rub the metal until it shines, using a polish if necessary.

Reinstall those pieces of cabinet hardware and enjoy your new digs.

Bottle Hydration

Many people, especially those in hot weather climates, have challenges with staying hydrated. People simply don’t know how much water is needed, and what basic, daily activities will dehydrate their bodies. Hydrating yourself is simple if you follow a few easy tips. These tips are especially important when participating in a weekly exercise program.

1. It is important to limit your caffeine intake. Caffeine naturally dehydrates the body, causing immediate dehydration. While that morning coffee or latte at Starbucks sounds great, try going for a morning walk to gain the energy you need for your day.

2. Upon waking consume 16 oz. of water in the morning. This will not only hydrate your body it will give your system a much needed jump start for the day. The human body actually loses water during sleep.

3. Don’t wait until your thirsty to drink water. By the time you feel thirsty, you have probably already lost two or more cups of your total body water composition.

4. Throughout the day, consume one gallon of water. While this may sound like a lot of water, if you fill up a milk jug size bottle with water, and drink it throughout the day, you will see it’s not that hard. It is important not to consume more than 2 gallons of water. This will flush the body of important vitamins and minerals needed for daily activity.

5. For every hour of working out, consume AT LEAST 16 ounces of water. This will keep your body functioning at 100% of its capabilities. In addition, when finished exercising, drink at least 8 ounces of water.

6. In areas where the water is not the best quality, do not consume tap water. Not only is bottled water better for your system, it makes drinking a gallon of water a much more enjoyable experience.

7. Water, not carbonated beverages or sports drinks, is the best fluid for keeping hydrated when it’s warm outside. Water is absorbed much more quickly than other fluids and may help to cool off your overheated body.

According to a study conducted by scientists at the Gatorade Sports Science Institute (GSSI) in Barrington, IL, athletes consistently underestimate how much water they need to stay hydrated. The study concluded athletes could not estimate their sweat losses and fluid consumption during a 10-mile race. Eighteen seasoned runners participated in the study. The results showed that the runners drastically underestimated how much sweat they lost and consequently drank too little to stay well hydrated. The runners underestimated their sweat losses by an average of 46 percent and their fluid intake by an average of 15 percent, resulting in the runners replacing only 30 percent of their fluids lost through sweat.

“These data show that even the most experienced runners are unable to accurately estimate their sweat losses and cannot subjectively judge how much fluid to drink to prevent dehydration,” said Mary Horn, M.S., co-author of the study and exercise sensory scientist at GSSI. “If seasoned athletes such as these do such a poor job of judging their fluid needs, the potential for dehydration may be more severe for the average exerciser, especially during the hot summer months.”

Be sure to drink plenty of fluids throughout the week, and make water a permanent and consistent part of your day. Afterall, it’s good for you.

Packing for a day-long backpacking trip is one thing. Packing for a week-long trek is another thing. But how about packing for a month-long backpacking excursion? Many of us may cringe at the thought of preparing for a trip lasting for 30 days, let alone one that requires us to transform our backpack into the a snail’s or turtle’s shell. While hauling our household appliances with us on a month-long backpacking trip is impractical, enjoying a month-long backpacking trip can be easier than expected. We can certainly take some steps to make our trip as practical as wearing Metal Tags:

1. A huge feat for feet. In the grand scheme of things, what is a month? But without the proper footwear, every step will seem like forever and a day, to your feet. Along with your Metal Tags, you should wear your hiking footwear whenever possible. The trick is to wear a pair of shoes or boots that have some space between your feet and the footwear-but not too much space. From my experience, three-quarter or high-top footwear is ideal, to provide your ankle enough support while hiking. You may have some knowledge about the general terrain that you will encounter while backpacking. That said, it is better to always be prepared for the unexpected boulders that you may have to climb up or across.

2. Separating needs and wants. When going on a lengthy, month-long backpacking trip, some items may seem as crucial as outstanding Military Dog Tags, when in fact they are best left at home:

• One book is enough. If you like reading as much as I do, you probably take a library of books with you on vacation, but end up reading none to one of them.

• One and a half pairs of footwear is enough to bring along a month-long backpacking trip: one pair of comfortable shoes or boots, and one pair of flip-flops.

• An MP3 player can conveniently provide hours upon hours of rock, jazz, country, rap, classical, or polka (yes, polka!) music for you to enjoy. But make sure not to overdo it. Items such as portable game systems can become too heavy and bulky.

3. Packing light is still right. If you will be camping and backpacking for a month, it may seem logical to pack everything except the kitchen sink. However, while you should bring the necessities, such as Military Dog Tags, it is still advisable to pack light. In fact, while deciding which items to include on your trip, and which items to leave at home, it is wise to leave out items that you stack in your “maybe” pile. As a general rule, “when in doubt, leave it out.”

4. Learn to layer. When backpacking, keep in mind that you are not in a fashion show. So it is always better to choose function over form, and only wear practical accessories, such as a hat with a broad brim, and Rectangular Tags. In particular, tend to choose lightweight clothing over heavier pieces, to conserve weight in your camping backpack. For instance, a Coleman Emergency Poncho or Coleman for Kids Disposable Rain Poncho would be better options than a bulky raincoat. Also, you could opt for a few long-sleeved t-shirts, over a heavy sweatshirt.

One month is a relative drop in the bucket, in the average American lifespan of 912 months. But a month-long backpacking trip can seem like an eternity if you haul more than the essential items, which include Rectangular Tags. So before you start your month-long expedition, always make sure to pack light, and pack right.
