Pt 3 “Moonscape Backpacking” by Nutnfancy

Firemaking in progess as Part 3 picks up and you’ll see if my paper thin wood shavings with the Mora TopQ worked or not with flint and steel. I wanted us to use natural methods only this time and we find it more time consuming and iffy, even in this good weather. After midnite the fire roars after all the works. We have chance to dry the feet out and get in some fireside chat on some interesting subjects (stay in your car!). The night is peaceful and solitude up here is complete, full moon still blazing brightly. I show you our shelter choices and discuss the specifics. Somewhere along the way I get even with Cr0cket for all the bad air he’d been pushing out. Then we get serious in the morning with lots of gear testing and making the always-tough TCE (time calorie energy) decisions. We are impressed with the Buck Hoodlum and it makes a perfect companion to the Sawvivor for minimizing work. Crosscutting the dense aspen log pretty much sucks but it gives the edges a good work out. “Hike Now, Play Later” by Nutnfancy (’Summer Snow’ Actual Pt 1)

Leave the push-button world behind and come on along for a Nutnfancy backpacking trip. It seems like it’s always a sacrifice to peel away from the world and make it out to my wilderness places. Messages pile up, phones go unanswered, emails fill the inbox, and careers are put aside for awhile. But it’s always worth it and it creates one of those special memorable experiences. I do my best in this series to share it with you. As I mention in many of my vids, a wilderness backpacking adventure is one of my top recommended ways to make memories with your friends and family, instill wilderness confidence, learn about your gear (and yourself), and to “depussify” your children. That’s because it’s hard work and requires planning and lots of effort. Here we hike in about 7 miles on what soon becomes a snow covered, hidden trail. As shown, wading and post holing through 4 foot snow banks will wear you out, especially at high elevations. The upside to to this difficulty was the complete isolation we quickly achieved on this trip; we saw no one else in the three days we were up there and we owned the basin (though in warmer days this is a very high use area). With a steady but deliberate pace we reach a gorgeous high mountain lake, still partially frozen from the long winter. It is serene and beautiful. Appalachian Trail sectional hike from GA to NC

My brother-in-law and I hiked the entire AT in Georgia. It starts at Springer Mt. and ends about 15 miles east northeast of Hiawassee, GA. A total of about 85 miles. It was quite an adventure. We spent six nights in the woods and carried an average of 35 pounds of gear. We saw many species of plants, flowers, trees, along with snakes, rabbits, coyote, deer, chipmunks & all sorts of birds.
