External frame backpacks

Any serious hiker knows that for sheer expandability and load-handling, external frame backpacks are hard to beat. Though they offer a range of storage space, the nature of an external frame allows for a degree of flexibility in packing that is sometimes lacking with internal frame packs. This means that you can pack, adjust, and overload an external frame pack more readily than a typical internal pack, while retaining the weight transfer benefits common to the external pack.

Before internal frame backpacks were born, the external was the only option - and it served backcountry hikers well...and still does. With an external frame backpack you will typically see large storage areas and not many smaller compartments - but that's not always necessarily the case. Modern external frame packs have begun to incorporate the convenient features native to their offspring, such as side pouches for water bottles or hydration packs, hip belts, and more.

The selling point for many outbackers is that external frame backpacks transfer load weights to the hips extremely well, making them more confortable to wear on extended trips, when one might tend to have more and heavier equipment on/in their pack.

If you're a hard-core backcountry hiker, don't shy away from external frame packs without first giving them a serious look. You might find that they suit your purposes better than an internal frame backpack will. Modern external frame packs can be had for less than $100 to $300 - with tons of space and features.
